One thread per student, not one app per purpose

The SchoolDeck parent app gives each family a single view of their child: timetable, homework, attendance, fee status with a payment link, results, and school circulars. Messages are threaded per student, so a parent with two children in the school does not have to work out which child a notice refers to.

It is the school’s channel to parents, not a social network. There is no parent-to-parent messaging and no group chat, deliberately.

Most schools end up with four channels: a broadcast SMS, a WhatsApp group per class run by a parent volunteer, an app for fees, and a diary. Nothing is authoritative, everything is duplicated, and the class group has become a forum the school cannot moderate but is judged by.

01

What parents actually open

Three things, consistently: what is due, what was paid, and what the child scored. Everything else is read when prompted by a notification and ignored otherwise.

This is worth designing around rather than resisting. An app that puts those three on the first screen gets opened; one that puts a news feed there gets uninstalled, and then the fee reminder has nowhere to land.

02

Why there is no group chat

Class groups are where school communication goes wrong. They run at hours no teacher should be answering, they turn a single query into a public discussion, and the school carries the reputational consequence of a channel it does not control.

A parent here can message the school, and the school can reply — threaded against the student, visible to the staff who should see it, with a record. Parents talking to each other is fine; it just does not need to be the school’s liability.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Phrased the way they arrive, answered so each one stands on its own.

What can parents see in the app?

Their child’s timetable, homework due, attendance, fee status with a payment link, published results, and school circulars. A parent with more than one child in the school sees each child separately rather than a merged feed.

What if parents do not install the app?

Anything important falls back to SMS or WhatsApp. Adoption is never complete, so the app is treated as the preferred channel rather than the only one.

Can teachers be contacted directly?

Messages are threaded against the student and routed to the staff who should handle them, with a record. There is no direct personal contact detail exposed, and no group chat.
