Transport is where a school’s data model usually first breaks. A child changes stop in October, the fee is billed for the old zone until March, and the driver has a printed list from July.
A student’s stop changes mid-year more often than anything else about them, because families move, siblings start, and arrangements shift. Every one of those changes has three consequences: the route manifest, the fee, and who the school tells.
Recording the change with an effective date handles all three at once. The manifest updates from that date, the fee bills the new zone from that date, and the previous arrangement stays on the record rather than being overwritten — which matters when a query arrives about what was charged in November.
A parent rings to say they are collecting their child today. The question is which bus that child is assigned to, whether they have already boarded, and who to tell before it leaves. That is a thirty-second answer or a five-minute panic, and which one it is depends entirely on whether transport reads the same record as everything else.
