Marks to grade calculator

Convert marks to a grade under a stated band scheme, with the full band table shown alongside so a borderline mark can be checked against the boundary — and with the marks still needed to reach the next band.

Grade bands are set by your board or school and revised. Some boards apply bands relatively rather than absolutely, in which case a fixed table does not describe them.

The conversion is a lookup, and the reason to show the whole table rather than just the letter is that the person checking is usually checking a borderline case — a mark one below a boundary, and a parent asking why.

Boundaries are inclusive, and that matters at 90

A band stated as 91 and above includes 91. A student on 90.5 is not in it unless your scheme rounds before banding — and whether it rounds before or after is a school policy that should be written down, because it decides grades every single term.

02

Absolute against relative grading

A fixed band table is absolute grading: 91 is an A1 regardless of how the cohort performed. Some boards grade relatively, positioning students against the distribution of the cohort, in which case no fixed table can produce the grade and this calculator will not give you the right answer.

If your board publishes a table, it is absolute. If it publishes a method involving the cohort, it is not.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Phrased the way they arrive, answered so each one stands on its own.

Can I enter my school’s own grade bands?

The calculator carries the common schemes. Where your school publishes its own boundaries, use the scheme closest in shape and read the band table against your own — the boundaries are what matter.

Does it handle grade points?

Yes, where the scheme defines them, shown alongside the letter.

What about practical and theory components?

Many boards require a separate minimum in each. Enter the combined mark for the overall grade, but check component minimums separately — a student can clear the aggregate and still fail on a component.
