Question paper blueprint generator

This tool builds and prints a question paper blueprint: sections, question types, how many questions are printed against how many a student must answer, marks each, the paper total, and the cognitive spread. It checks the arithmetic against your intended total, which is the error usually found after printing.

It does not write questions. We hold no question bank and do not generate items — the questions are set by the subject teacher against the prescribed syllabus.

Most people searching for a question paper generator want a tool that writes the questions. We should say plainly at the top that this is not that, and why, rather than letting you find out three screens in.

We hold no question bank. Generating questions would mean one of two things: inventing items that look plausible but that nobody has checked against your syllabus, or reproducing somebody else’s questions, which are not ours to reproduce. A paper assembled from unchecked generated items is a paper a teacher has to verify question by question, which is not a saving.

The arithmetic that actually goes wrong

Blueprint errors are almost never conceptual. They are counting mistakes, and they are found at the worst moment.

  • Choice counted as marks. A section printing eight questions of which six must be answered is worth six times the marks, not eight. This is the single most common error and it inflates a paper by exactly the marks of the choice.
  • A section total that does not sum. Five questions at five marks is twenty-five, but the header says twenty. Discovered by a student, mid-examination.
  • A paper total that misses the intended figure by two or three marks, usually after a late change to one section.
  • A cognitive spread that does not come to 100%, which a moderator will send straight back.

Each of those is checked here as you type, and stated plainly rather than flagged with a symbol.

02

Why we will not generate the questions

This is the same rule that governs the rest of what we build: we are the record, not the syllabus.

  • We cannot check a generated question against your syllabus. Neither can you, quickly — verifying forty generated items takes longer than writing twenty good ones.
  • Generated items are confidently wrong in specific ways. A question can be well-formed, appear to test the right chapter, and rest on an assumption the syllabus does not make.
  • A paper is a professional judgement. The teacher who set it can defend every question to a moderator. That is what makes it a paper rather than a worksheet.

The blueprint is the part that is genuinely mechanical, and mechanical work is what a tool should take.

03

Using the blueprint with a moderator

The printed blueprint carries space for two signatures, prepared by and moderated by, because the blueprint is what a moderator reviews before the paper itself is set.

Agreeing the structure first — how many marks in each section, what spread of demand — means the moderation conversation about the paper is about the questions rather than the shape, which is a faster and more useful conversation.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Phrased the way they arrive, answered so each one stands on its own.

Will this write questions for my subject?

No. It produces the blueprint — sections, counts, marks, cognitive spread — and checks the arithmetic. The questions are yours to set against your own syllabus, and we think that is the right division of labour rather than a limitation.

How is internal choice counted?

Enter the questions printed and the questions a student must answer separately. Marks are computed from the number to be answered, since a question offered only as an alternative adds paper space rather than marks.

Does the cognitive spread have to be those four levels?

They are the four most Indian boards use in blueprints. The percentages are yours to set and must come to 100; the tool shows the marks each level works out to at your paper total.

Can I print it?

Yes, on A4, with your school’s letterhead at the top and signature space for the setter and the moderator. Print or save as PDF from the preview.
