A bonafide certificate states that a named student is currently enrolled at the school, in a stated class, for a stated academic year. It carries the student’s name, parents’ names, date of birth, class and section, period of study, the purpose it was issued for, a serial number from the school’s register, and the head of institution’s signature and seal.
The requesting authority — a bank, a passport office, a consulate — often prescribes specific wording. Ask what they need before issuing, because a reissue takes as long as the original.
A bonafide certificate answers one question: is this person really a student here, right now. It gets asked by banks opening an account, passport offices, transport authorities issuing a concession pass, and consulates processing a visa.
The reason it is reissued so often is that the purpose was not stated on it, and the receiving authority wanted the purpose stated. Ask what it is for before you print it.
Below is the set that receiving authorities commonly check.
| Field | Why it is there | Where it goes wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate serial number | Ties the document to the school’s register | Invented per document, so there is no register entry behind it |
| Student name, as on record | Identity match at the receiving authority | Everyday spelling used instead of the record spelling |
| Father’s and mother’s name | Banks and passport offices check both | Only the father recorded on older templates |
| Date of birth, figures and words | The words are the tie-breaker | Figures only, which some authorities reject outright |
| Class and section, current | Establishes present enrolment | Last year’s class on a certificate issued in April |
| Period of study at this school | Continuity, for visa and scholarship purposes | Omitted, then asked for separately |
| Purpose of issue | Most authorities want it stated explicitly | Left generic, causing a reissue |
| Date of issue | Freshness — many authorities want it recent | A certificate issued months earlier is refused |
| Signature and school seal | What makes it a certificate rather than a letter | Photocopied signature, which invalidates it |
A generator can fill in every detail correctly and format the page properly. What it must not do is manufacture the things that make the document authentic.
Our own generator follows exactly these rules, which is why it produces a document with blank signature space and asks you to type the serial.
Phrased the way they arrive, answered so each one stands on its own.
There is no statutory validity. In practice receiving authorities treat it as current for the academic year stated, and many want one issued within the last three to six months. Ask the authority rather than assuming.
It states enrolment, not fee status, so there is no factual reason to withhold it. Withholding documents to enforce payment has generally been viewed unsympathetically where a child’s education or entitlements are affected; take advice on your own state.
A bonafide certifies current enrolment. A study certificate covers a period of study, often across several years, and is usually what a scholarship or a domicile claim actually needs. Confirm which is being asked for.
