SSLC, HSC, and the EMIS number that identifies a Tamil Nadu student

A Tamil Nadu state board school runs SSLC at Class 10 and HSC across Classes 11 and 12 under the Directorate of Government Examinations, and identifies every student by an EMIS number that follows them between schools — which makes it the identifier the school record has to key on.

Board nomenclature and portal processes change, and several boards have reorganised recently. Confirm the current circular for your own board before relying on any filing detail here.

Tamil Nadu has run a state education management information system for longer and more thoroughly than most states, and its EMIS number is genuinely used — a student transferring between schools carries it. That changes what the school’s own record has to look like.

An identifier that outlives the enrolment

Most school identifiers are local: an admission number means something inside one school and nothing outside it. An EMIS number does not stop at the gate, which means the school record has to store it as a first-class field, validate it on entry, and never overwrite it when a student transfers in with one already allotted.

The common failure is a transfer-in student being given a fresh local admission number with the EMIS number typed into a remarks field. From then on the state’s view of that student and the school’s view are two records, and reconciling them at a return is manual.

+1 and +2 as one continuous cohort

Higher secondary spans two years with subject groups chosen at entry to +1 and carried into +2. Modelling the group on the section, and the two years as one continuous enrolment rather than two admissions, is what keeps the +2 mark sheet consistent with what was actually studied from +1.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Phrased the way they arrive, answered so each one stands on its own.

Does it store the EMIS number against each student?

Yes, as a distinct field alongside the school’s own admission number, UDISE code and any APAAR ID. They are not interchangeable and none of them is stored in a remarks field.

Are Tamil-medium report cards supported?

Yes, following the section’s medium, with subject names as the board states them.

Does it file to the state EMIS portal?

No. It holds the data in the fields the portal asks for and exports it. Submission remains the school’s action.
