Admissions in Indian higher education are an arithmetic problem with legal consequences. Merit lists have to be reproducible, reservation has to be applied correctly at each round, and seats freed in round two have to move to the right candidate rather than the most recent phone call.
A merit list is a document a rejected candidate may formally challenge. If it cannot be regenerated from the same inputs to give the same output, the institution is in a weak position regardless of whether it was correct.
Weighting, tie-break rules and category application are configured once and applied deterministically. Every published list is retained with the inputs it was generated from, so a list published in June can be reproduced in November.
