SGPA is the credit-weighted average of grade points for one semester: the sum of (credits × grade point) divided by total credits. CGPA is the same calculation across all completed semesters. Converting either to a percentage depends on your university’s own rule, which varies.
There is no single national conversion rule. Multiplying CGPA by 9.5 is common but not universal — check your university’s regulations before quoting a percentage anywhere it matters.
The calculation itself is not the hard part. What causes problems is the conversion to percentage, because students quote a figure derived from a rule their university does not use, and discover the discrepancy on an application form.
One semester, five courses, on a ten-point scale.

The example above produces 80.75% or 85% depending on which rule applies — a four-point difference that can sit either side of an eligibility threshold for a job application or a postgraduate course.
Your university publishes the rule it uses, usually in the examination regulations. That is the only one that counts on a transcript, and it is worth finding once rather than assuming.

Multiply each course’s credits by its grade point, add those products, and divide by the total credits for the semester. Courses with more credits therefore weigh more, which is the whole point of a credit system.

It depends on your regulations. Some universities count the improved mark after a repeat, some retain the original, and some cap the grade achievable on a repeat attempt.
