College fee calculator, for the whole programme

This calculator estimates the total cost of a degree programme rather than one year: tuition across all semesters, plus hostel and mess, examination fees, and one-off admission and caution deposits, with an assumption for annual fee escalation.

An estimate from figures you enter. Colleges revise fees between years, and escalation clauses vary, so treat the total as indicative.

Families almost always compare colleges on first-year tuition, which is the number colleges publish. The number that matters is the four-year total including hostel, and it is frequently more than double the figure being compared.

What gets left out of the comparison

The costs that are real, recurring, and rarely in the headline figure.

  • Hostel and mess, often comparable to tuition and charged separately, sometimes monthly rather than per semester.
  • Examination fees, per semester, and again for any repeat attempt.
  • Annual escalation. A 10% yearly increase makes the fourth year roughly a third more expensive than the first.
  • Caution deposits. Refundable in principle, and a real cash requirement at admission.
  • Repeat attempts. Not predictable, but worth knowing the per-course cost before it happens.
FAQ

Questions people ask

Phrased the way they arrive, answered so each one stands on its own.

Why calculate the whole programme rather than one year?

Because first-year tuition is the number colleges publish and the least useful one. With hostel, escalation and examination fees, the four-year total is often more than double what families are comparing.

Are caution deposits included?

Yes, as a one-off, since they are a real cash requirement at admission even though they are refundable in principle.
